In less than four months, the United States surpassed the upsetting milestone of 100,000 deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic along with more than 1.6 million infected cases. This is the best estimate, which is most likely an undercount to the true amount of people dead as 1,100 people die daily. To put this into perspective, more Americans have died from COVID-19 than from both the Korean and Vietnam war combined.

With the uncertainty of the future, this only opens up more unforeseen sadness as public areas like Walt Disney World and beaches begin to open up. After Dr. Fauci, the US’s infectious disease expert, saw videos of people gathering for Memorial Day without masks, he became more stern about the importance of staying safe during this time as this “situation could get out of control”. Health officials across the globe predict a resurgence of the virus in the fall time. There are many critics going after President Donald Trump claiming that him and the Trump Administration has severely undermined and downplayed the situation by reacting slowly to the pandemic.

Globally, more than 5.6 million people have been infected with over 350,000 people killed by the virus. Luckily, there are about a dozen vaccine candidates that are actively/ close to being tested for the public; health officials claim that a potential vaccine might be done late this year or early next year.

Within Pennsylvania, the number of infected cases have significantly decreased from approximately 2,000 cases on April 9th to less than 800 cases now. Western counties in Pennsylvania have a low amount of cases and will be entering the green phase on soon or June 5th. As Pennsylvanians continue to recover from the pandemic, they are slowly getting discharged from hospitals and back into the world.

Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pennsylvania discharged their first patient on May 1st. After being hospitalized for 31 days while on ventilators and in a coma during his two week period, he was congratulated by more than 50 physicians, nurses, and doctors as he was being discharged from the hospital.

The United States is still in the process of flattening the curve, and a way that we can help this process is by wearing masks and social distancing. As the virus continues to venture along American soil, health care workers and hospitals need supplies and support more than ever. Donating money and requesting commissions from Artists Against COVID - 19 can help support nearby hospitals in Pennsylvania. Thank you for your continued support!
