News Around the World

Writer: Riya SembhiRiya Sembhi

Conditions are complex around the world. Some countries' infected rates are decreasing' some countries' death rates are climbing; some countries have reopened their businesses and schools. The state of countries around the world vary with COVID-19, and it is relevant to recognize the state in various parts around the world.

We'll read the different situations around the world:

  • Spain - Spain is preparing to set up its first regional election since the pandemic began in March. The Popular Party in Galicia and the Basque regionalist party hope to stay in power. To vote, one has to wear a mask and stay 1.5 meters apart in a line. If one is contaminated with the virus, they can mail in their vote or have another person vote for them. Their state of emergency and lockdown was fully lifted on June 21st after a few phases of de-escalation phases occurred. On July 1st, the country opened up its borders to allow tourists to visit because tourism is a major part of Spain's economy. The number of cases and deaths have dropped significantly since March an April. Spain has marveled about their claim that they are the "healthiest country in the world" with their universal health care system and highest life expectancy in the EU, but now that reputation has been tarnished.

  • United Kingdom - At the moment, Britain has the greatest number of COVID-19 deaths in Europe. Recently, the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced that marriages are allowed but only with strict guidelines. New rules include: only 30 people are allowed to attend the wedding, receptions/ larger parties are banned, there is no singing allowed, and vows must be read sotto voce (intentionally lowering the voice). With the U.K. losing 5.7 billion pounds ($7.1 billion), they hope that traditional wedding ceremonies can continue once the pandemic passes. The government has created multiple plans for students to return to school in September as the number of their cases is declining.

  • India - Considered a developing country, India has focused on keeping the economy steady rather than the surging cases. At first, the country had a strict lockdown that the people followed and maintained, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi eased the nation's lockdown, which increased the anxiety and resurgence of cases. Unfortunately, the spread of the virus is being blamed on the Muslims that reside next door in Pakistan and India. With the continued religious hatred toward Muslims in India, the tension increase. Yesterday, major Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan tested positive for COVID-19.

  • Brazil - Brazil removed themselves from the Health's Ministry website because they believed that the states within Brazil were offering inflated figures. The Supreme Court justice ordered to report the numbers of cases and deaths. With Latin American being the new epicenter of the pandemic, Brazil might become the country with the most amount of deaths across the globe. The country's President Jair Bolsonaro is severely criticized for the handling of the pandemic because he continued the economy to keep working despite the country's surging. Now, Bolsonaro tested positive for the virus. As a response to the virus, the country has boosted the amount of hydroxychloroquine in hospitals - encouraging doctors to prescribe it. The country is struggling with supplying equipment like ventilators and testing kits. To ease the economic distress, Bolsonaro has given $120 - $240 to those who have lost their income.

  • Hong Kong - In Hong Kong, they received their first wave of the virus in January. During the second wave, they closed down the schools. Between June and July 5th, students went to school as it seemed that the sovereign state was beating COVID-19. Unfortunately, the area is in heir third wave of the virus, which means that they closed down schools again. Schools in Hong Kong wore matching uniforms and masks and were scanned by a thermometer every time they entered the school. With plastic barriers and socially distant activities, Hong Kong was prepared and acted quickly to ensure that students are safe. Within this third wave of the virus, many believe that this might be the worst wave. Anxiety and pressure toward the government have increased as well. Hong Kong officials want to close the borders and have stricter social distancing rules. (Hong Kong does not have a graph on the NYTimes website)
